One down from her wish list. She now has three houses. All three located in different towns. She got it all through her husband. That's two down from her wish list. She found a husband who spoke a language that the entire barangay has never heard before. The language was music to her parent's ears. The music has fast rhythm, a worthwhile ride to soar up high. It's the ride to get to the end of the rainbow without having to scour the fields for starch and the sea for pearls. And now she sits at the veranda facing the beach. That's three down from her wish list. Her husband was away for an errand - doing the grocery - it's either him or both of them. She was never by herself doing that.
Then she heard laughter coming from the beach. They were from two young women swimming nearby. They looked at her and she looked at them. And just by looking back at them, she remembered when she was their age. She shook her head and looked at the girls scornfully. The girls must have wished they were in her shoes. They must've envied her. They must envy her. That's four down from her wish list.
Then she heard footsteps coming toward her. It was her husband's. She almost leapt with the sound. In fact, it makes her do things that would make her somewhat, useful. But today she won't have to stand and bow down her head. When her husband was about to utter a word, she pointed at the two girls swimming in the shore. It was a relief to see the sudden turn in her husband's attention. Her husband's forehead wrinkled when she saw the two women and shouted to their direction, "Get off, you lowbrows. This is private property."
After seeing the girls leave, her husband turned to where her wife was to tell her how lazy a bitch she is but, she was nowhere to be found. He looked around and was relieved when he heard noises in the kitchen of someone running the water. She must be preparing dinner, he thought. And to himself he spoke, "That's where that ignorant should be right now."
In the kitchen, the wife was feeling giddy at the thought of the two girls being shooed. They deserve it. She laughed and muttered to herself, "Ignorants!" She called them that. She will call them that. And, that's five down from her wish list.
